Frédéric d’Ursel, violin
Cindy Castillo, organ
This disc, the first of a three-part series, intertwines two instruments and two eras. Organ and violin join forces to infuse 18th-century works with contemporary verve. Performing on the 1841 Korfmacher/Thomas organ in Stavelot (Belgium) and on an 1844 Gand Père violin, Cindy Castillo and Frédéric d’Ursel present works by Johann Sebastian Bach and Jean-Pierre Deleuze.
In a cycle of three programs, they will perform the six sonatas BWV 1014-1019, viewed through a modern lens. Here is a glimpse into their thought process.
Like a modern-day jeweler setting an ancient gemstone, Jean-Pierre Deleuze has embedded his own score around and at the heart of these two sonatas to create a dreamlike vision of Bach’s work, poetically titled Träume und Erwachen (Dreams and Awakenings).
